The Mission of Stewart County School System is to provide a quality education to all students. School counselors are integral members of the instructional team and directly impact student achievement by delivering services that meet the needs of the 21st century school community.

School counseling services are delivered in four specific ways: classroom guidance, individual student planning, responsive services, and system support.

How does your child experience school counseling services?

Individual counseling: A warm, safe, confidential and inviting environment is provided to discuss many topics regarding their social/emotional needs, career goals as well as academic success. Topics may include but are not limited to friendship issues, stress/anxiety, time management, bullying, and social skills.

Small Group Counseling: A process where students sharing similar issues or concerns work together in a group consisting of 3-6 peers. Sessions last for about 30-45 minutes, typically meeting for 6-8 weeks.  Topics are based on the needs of the students and may include social skills,  anger management, self esteem, and conflict resolution. I will be using two small group curriculums this year: "Building Champions" for boys and "Star-Bound" for girls.

Classroom Guidance: Classroom guidance lessons are regularly scheduled during the students' special area time. Lessons address social/emotional, academic, and career related needs at the child's developmental level. A great bit of the lessons include character ed development.

Academic Interventions: Our Sped director, teachers, and I collaborate together to provide supplementary interventions unique to each student's specific needs. This is done through our RtI process, which is also known as Response to Intervention. Meetings are held  as needed where student progression or regression is discussed before deciding next steps. Students maybe be placed in this process based on academics and/or behavior. Progression is monitored for 6-8 weeks and documented . Each tier of intervention is rigorous and specifically geared to each student. To find out more about RtI, please contact the school.
